Red Rock Canyon (Randsburg,Ca.)

Seven parks within the greater Mojave Desert, set aside to preserve, protect, and interpret natural and cultural features.

Red Rock Canyon, Mitchell Caverns, Saddleback Butte, Antelope Valley Indian Museum, California Poppy Reserve, Providence Mountains and Mitchelle Caverns, and Ripley Desert Woodland are all State Parks.



Red Rock Canyon attracts visitors from every walk of life: Geologists, paleontologists, movie makers, campers and hikers. The opening scenes from " Jurassic Park" were filmed here. As was "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" and many early western movies.

In this pristine environment there is a great deal of life and existence. Daytime summer temperatures are above 100 degrees. The light of early morning or late afternoon creates an atmosphere of color and magic.

Winter temperatures drop below freezing at night, while daytime is delightful at 50 to 60 degrees. When the snow chances to fall on Red Rock Canyon it is a winter wonderland of indescribable beauty.

The park is located far from city lights, providing you with the best "star gazing" opportunities. The visitor center is a great source of information on the geogology and paleontology of Red Rock Canyon. Located at the entrance , as you enter the park., where they house artifacts from ancient history.

Red Rock Canyon is only seventeen miles from Johannesburg and Death Valley Hostel. A great hiking and climbing experience..a fantastic backyard playground, as some say.
